Sonnet Mapped to a Grid
The grid has been breaking down for decades
at least since the time of Agnes Martin who lived
with a lioness when she nailed the universe to
her flattening plane not lacking in color not
lacking in a quiet boldness she traversed a massive
swathe of territory in so many ways from rural
unchained Saskatchewan to the acid-painted desert
of New Mexico but always tastefully appointed
as the lights once more began to flicker and fade
as the hum of appliances would suddenly switch
to a nervous silence and food began to deteriorate
refrigeration releasing its chilling grip such a waste
as the trash cans fill to overflowing and maggots
breed and multiply beneath a relentless sun.
Poet and songwriter Paul Ilechko is the author of three chapbooks. His work has appeared in a variety of journals, including The Night Heron Barks, Rogue Agent, Ethel, Lullwater Review, and Book of Matches. His first album was recently released and is available from all good streaming sites. He lives with his partner in Lambertville, NJ.
