Sleigh Dog
You are my oldest friend,
born and bred
from a hole
they left behind.
You dwell deep within me,
lick your lips
as I dangle dreams
unspeakable in your absence.
I harness you like a sleigh dog
and you drag me without protest
over hostile, frigid shores.
In the dark,
you press yourself against me,
gnaw upon my hand.
I rise to the guilt
of a bad master,
stretch my limbs
and ruffle your fur.
You run to fetch the reins.
Lawrence Moore has been writing poems – some silly, some serious – since childhood. He lives in Portsmouth, England with his husband Matt and nine mostly well behaved cats.
