Hunger

I shine out of the hollowed eye sockets
of famished children, overlooked

I sing the psalm of the starved,
who were living skeletons before

they could crawl, a mass of bones
made of the sun’s dimensions—

109 Earths lined up across their angular faces,
hands, mouths, gaping like featherless birds


Melissa Joplin Higley toured internationally as a sound engineer with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble and Disney’s The Lion King North American Tour. She holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and co-facilitates the Poetry Craft Collective (poets teaching poets, for free!).
