Mirrors
In Volcano, Hawaii, I shot the mirrored ceiling
above our motel bed to capture you in your boxers,
legs akimbo, beside me in my sundress; both of us
at rest after tramping around petroglyphs that day.
I showed you how we looked on the display screen.
Delighted with our nuptial repose, I dubbed it
our very own Arnolfini portrait.
A couple of years later, I caught you studying yourself
in the mirrored sliding doors of our bedroom closet.
You didn’t invite me to look on, too, not once
returning my gaze as I lay pliant underneath you.
A dress rehearsal for someone somewhere else.
