‘Gleaners’ by Mantz Yorke

Gleaners

Days without food. Despair
wraps its tentacles
round bony shoulders

as women scrabble in hot sand
for grain spilt from sacks
gunmen have carried away.

Down the track, the truck
diminishes, vanishes
in a swirl of dust.
