‘Hymn’ by Jessica Wood

The Wheel Turns

Hymn

Before long      the bright green trees
will turn to blossom     the fat bud

of an apple will fall       onto grass  to
be baked into a crumble

the hot rays of sun will kiss  then burn
cheeks              and the evenings will stretch

into nights       sitting in the cool listening
to the susurrus of voices          glass tinkling

until  before long         the wind          will whip faster  the
trees     are lit ablaze in cascading

red and amber              they crisp and fall
like hot coals     onto beds of snow

as ice frosts the windowpanes
evenings shrink into brisk walks

in the cold before        long the bright green trees return
                       and turn to blossom.
