‘Scent Trail’ by Aaron Sandberg

Where Whispers Merged
by Bill Wolak

Scent Trail

The mattress growled,
the headboard barked,
your hair that shed
beneath the bed
became a hound
that traced you back
across the town –
with your blood
on its nose,
your scent
in its bones –
after giving it
the shirt you left
the night before
to sniff
and telling it
as we let it loose
that you were also
always looking
for yourself.
